520 |a This study determines the entry and exit English language proficiency in the speaking and reading skills that students from the Bachelor of Arts in English with emphasis in teaching have gotten and if the proficiency level influences on their teaching performance as assistants whereas they are required to teach English as a foreign language in the practicum I and II. Also this study attempts to identify the language deficiencies that students had and how they overcome those problems while they were teaching English; taking into consideration that they were assigned to teach English as a foreign language since basic up to advanced levels. The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) was selected to indicate the students’ level of English proficiency which was measured by applying the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) for the reading skill; the English speaking proficiency was measured by the speaking part of the TOEFL question 1 and 2. The population was the students from the fourth year of the Bachelor of Arts in English with emphasis in teaching of the University of El Salvador, semester I and II, 2016 carrying teaching practice I and II. The sample was 14 students assigned to do their practicum at the Foreign Language Department. Subsequently, data was collected by applying the instruments; the researchers divided students in the practicum by levels from A1 up to C2; the data was organized into tables and represented in graphs to ease the analysis and interpret the results. Lastly, the researchers provided conclusions and recommendations about the importance of the English proficiency when teaching EFL for students from the Bachelor of Arts in English with Emphasis in Teaching.
