592 |a The period between the end of the Second War and the beginning of the Cold Ward (1944-1948) represents an important conjuncturein the political and social history of Latin America. There are striking similarities in the experiences of the various Latin American republics during this time, despite different political regimes, levels of economic and social development, and relations whit the regional hegemon-the United States. Initially, reforms were attempted, accompanied by democratization, a shif to the Left, and labor militancy. However, the onset of the Cold Ward led to a shift to the Right, increased state control of labor, repression of the communist Left, and a reversal of democratization. An opportunity for significant political and social change, leading toward a Latin American version of social democracy, was lost.
