520 |a "On April 18, 1890, the Inter-American Delegates of the First International Conference of American States established in the city of Washington, D.C., a Latin-American Memorial Library, to commemorate the meeting of the International American Conference. It was formed by contritutions from all the Governments represented in the Conference, "wherein shall be collected al the historicak geographical and literacy works, and particularly official documents". year after year, this library, which today is called Columbus Memorial Library, has been designated as depository of the official documents of the Executive Council of the International Union of the American Republics, and also, the official documents of the Organization of American States (OAS). The Columbus Memorial Library published the first edition of the Classification Manual for the OAS Official Records Series: A Manual for the Maintenance of the Series in 1977. That Manual was offered to the General Secretariat, and to the public at large, as a guide for the organization and classification of the official documents of the OAS. Since many changes have been made to the structure of the Organization, a decision was made to update the Manual. The Organization of American States issues five titles that provide sources of information about its documents: the Lista General de los Documentos Oficiales and Indice Analítico of the "Catalog of OAS Technical Reports and Documents (Spanish/English); and, the Annual Report of the Secretary General. The Manual was compiled through a team effort by the OAS Documents Control Unit of the Columbus Memorial Library." (Copied from the Preface).
